About Empty Bowls
Empty Bowls is a grassroots initiative to address hunger. It was started by The Imagine Render Group in Michigan in the early 1990s. Potters, schools, businesses and the community come together to create an event involving a simple meal of soup and bread to raise awareness of hungry families. Donations are collected in support of an organization helping to provide food to those in need. Events have now taken place across the United States and in at least a dozen other countries. Many millions of dollars have been raised and donated to hunger-fighting organizations.
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year but when you volunteer or donate, you vote everyday about the kind of community you want to live in.”
